I had often heard of the small, Spanish Colonial city of San Miguel, set in the mountains of Mexico. The energy in the conversation with so many men and women that I met was extraordinary. At first, I could not decide how to capture what I saw and experienced there. As I walked the cobbled streets, too narrow to set up my easel to paint, I marveled at the colorful paper decorations in celebration of Holy Week. It was then I decided...I would find crepe paper like the decorations...with my tiny manicure scissors, I cut and pasted crooked, curved pieces of colored paper. I laid out my paints on a small table on the roof-top deck of my tiny penthouse apartment overlooking the city...to paint in the fall of 2006.
This series marks a time of Passage in my life. It all started here, in the spring of 2003, when I left my job in government, and drove to Santa Fe, New Mexico in my '73 Mustang Convertible..."Through Canyons & Skies"...
I love the body, that of both a woman and a man. My brush follows the feel of the body. I paint the energy; the movement of the body. My drawings are quick and expressive, as I capture the energy.
A good friend of mine sent me some beautiful images of his visit to Spain in 2005. I HAD to paint it; Spain. I will go to Spain myself one day. I love the sound of "Spain".
When I was visiting one of the many extraordinary galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, during the summer of 2003, I saw the work of Milton Avery, an American Artist. I absolutely loved his work; the color, the shapes, the names he gave to his paintings. It was "Milton & I" for a long while after that!
When we look at something or someone, we each see something different. This series expresses something entirely different than the actual landscape, figure or feeling; is very different than what a photograph would tell; it is "what my eyes see..."
I have always found painting flowers to be a wonderful opportunity to express myself in bold color, shape and texture; and, as a woman who loves to garden, painting a flower keeps me close to the marvel of nature.
Bob Dylan sings this crazy song about a girl wearing a Leopard-skin Pill-box Hat. I love wearing hats. I love wearing leopard-print clothes. I love Bob Dylan...do you???
